What you need to know before buying a knife
Choosing a hunting knife, a special purpose knife, or even an everyday carry knife shouldn't be something you lose sleep over. However, the quality, edge retention, as well as the particular purpose for the knife, does dictate the type of knife you need and other technical requirements. You'll be even better off owning several knives so that you are ready for action, no matter the occasion.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding on your blade of choice.
Knife purpose
If you are acquiring a knife for hunting, consider what type of game you'll be preparing. Our knives are traditionally designed for cutting, and usually have double sharpened edge blades that are slightly curved on most models, ideal for skinning and cutting. We have a wide selection of Fin and Feather or Fin and Fur; our fixed-blade series ranges from just over 70mm to our Giant series with blades as large as 117 mm. We now also have folders that are an excellent addition to your hunting artillery or knife collection.
Sharpness & Edge retention
The sharpness of your knife is not something you can compromise on and is vital in your knife selection process. The quality of a knife lies in the type of steel, the type of grind, the heat treatment, the handle material and finally the finishing of the knife. Arno Bernard Knives are cut from Böhler N690 (fixed blades) and RWL34 (folder) high carbon stainless steel, followed by hand hollow ground and then hand polished. The blades are heat treated and tempered using a liquid nitrogen process. This leads to a staggering hardness and ability to resist deforming when subjected to stress and applied force, resulting in a razor-sharp edge, with excellent edge retention characteristics. No matter your game, an Arno Bernard knife tells your outdoor companions that you have incredible taste and carry only the best gear.
The Knife Makers
It is important to know the company you'll be buying from, the quality of their products and their after-sales service and warranties. You definitely don't want to go for the bargain of the year if it means a trade-off on edge! Arno Bernard Knives is a family of knife makers who use their heritage of craftsmanship handed down from the previous generation of knife makers to design and create beautiful knives.
