Sharpness is fundamentally about concentrating force. A knife edge is sharp because it tapers down to a very thin edge, allowing the force applied during a cut to be concentrated over a smaller surface area. According to the basic principle of pressure (P) defined as force (F) divided by the area (A) over which it is applied (P = F/A), a smaller area results in greater pressure for the same amount of force. This is why a sharp knife cuts more easily than a dull one; it requires less force to penetrate or slice through a material.
We take great pride in our precision engineering. The Arno Bernard iMamba® metallic tolerances are incredibly precise, less than 1/100th of a millimeter - that's a tenth of the thickness of a standard piece of paper. Our knives stand as a testament to meticulous attention to detail and precision engineering.
Metallurgy plays a crucial role in the creation and maintenance of a knife's edge. The choice of material, its hardness, and the method of tempering are all vital.
We utilize premium raw materials. The excellence of the Arno Bernard iMamba® begins with the selection of high-quality components. Its blade is made from RWL 34 stainless steel, renowned for its durability and longevity.
Maintaining a knife's sharpness involves regular honing and occasional sharpening, processes that realign and reform the knife's edge, respectively.

]]>Knives, often featuring complex mechanisms and smooth operations, not only fulfill their primary function but also offer a pleasing tactile experience. The emergence of fidget knives and one-hand operable knives has been particularly significant. These designs, while ensuring safety and functionality, provide a tactile and visual appeal. In essence, the smoother and faster a folding knife can open and close, the better.
The iMamba® folding knife by Arno Bernard is one of our popular types of knives that will satisfy a 'knife fiddler' with its rounded opening tab on the top of the blade that enables one-handed opening.
While serious knife collectors may not like the term fidget/fiddle knives, there is no denying how a well-made knife with a smooth operation, taps something deep inside and lends itself to hours of satisfaction and appreciation of the opening and closing of the knife.
Despite the rise of fidgety knives, traditional folders maintain their relevance in the market. However, Everyday Carry (EDC) knives are becoming increasingly popular, primarily due to their versatility and convenience. The knife market has expanded into broader sectors, attracting individuals who would typically only carry a knife for camping, fishing, hiking, and similar activities. These people have come to appreciate the convenience and usefulness of owning and using an everyday carry (EDC) knife.
For a knife that is reminiscent of the simpler days take a look at our Rinkhals that has a slip joint mechanism that features an innovative “safety “when it is approximately halfway open which causes the blade to be under very little tension so it is easy to move your fingers out of the way before tension builds again and assists you in closing (or opening) the knife.
Knives with fancy blade designs and/or made from exotic materials are causing a stir and becoming increasingly popular. Add this to the EDC that is now a constant companion or the fiddle knife and you have a knife that draws serious attention.
In our knife designs, we enjoy incorporating exotic materials like Desert Ironwood, Snakeskin, Elforyn, Burlap Canvas, Titanium, and Kangaroo Leather. For the blades, a mirror finish grabs attention as does our Rinkhals Damasteel Rose with Solid Titanium.
In the current climate where a growing number of states are choosing to relax their previously stringent laws pertaining to knife ownership and carry, there has been a noticeable surge in the popularity of EDC, pocket knives, and fiddle/fidget knives. These types of knives, with their straightforward utility and the added bonus of the fun 'fiddle factor', are seeing their appeal significantly boosted.
As industry leaders maintain their pricing structures, smaller manufacturers are becoming more competitive, offering interesting designs and unique materials to attract customers.
These smaller manufacturers are not only providing a wider range of options for consumers but are also pushing the boundaries of innovation. They are experimenting with new materials, designs, and mechanisms, often leading to the creation of unique, high-quality knives that stand out in the market. This increased competition is beneficial for the industry as a whole, as it encourages constant improvement and innovation.
The thriving knife industry is constantly adapting to market trends and consumer preferences. The rise of knives as fidget toys showcase the industry's ability to innovate and deliver products that meet evolving needs and wants. As we move into 2024, we anticipate continued growth in this trend, driven by economic factors, political influences, design trends, and the rise of smaller manufacturers.

]]>An Everyday Carry (EDC) knife is the Swiss Army knife of the modern era. It's a versatile tool designed for a wide variety of situations, making it an excellent gift for anyone, especially those with a passion for the outdoors or a penchant for practicality.
An EDC knife is designed to be compact and lightweight, making it convenient to carry around. Whether tucked in a pocket, a bag, or a sheath, its unassuming presence makes it as essential as your phone or keys.
An EDC knife is constructed to endure frequent usage and withstand cutting through diverse materials. Whether you need to slice cheese, cut twine, clean a fish, or even make a fire, an EDC knife comes to the rescue.
Despite being a knife, safety is a crucial factor in its design. The Arno Bernard folding EDC knife, for instance, employs the innovative “safety” slip joint mechanism. This mechanism alleviates tension around the halfway open mark, allowing you to move your fingers out of the way before the tension builds up again. This ensures you can safely open or close the knife, making it a reliable tool for daily use.
An Arno Bernard EDC knife is crafted to last a lifetime and beyond. It can be handed down from generation to generation, turning into a cherished heirloom over time. When it comes to EDC knives, the name Arno Bernard Knives stands out. Our knives are not only beautifully handcrafted but also highly practical, making them the perfect Christmas gifts. The Arno Bernard Knife combines edge retention, stain and corrosion resistance, hardness, and added toughness. Each knife is a unique blend of craftsmanship and functionality, making it a worthy addition to any knife collection or an excellent tool for any outdoor enthusiast.
You might have heard the old saying that gifting a knife brings bad luck. This superstition dates back to the Vikings era, who found it inappropriate to accept knives as gifts. However, this belief has long lost its relevance. In today's context, gifting a knife is a symbol of respect, trust, and recognition of one's skills and achievements.
This Christmas, break away from the usual chocolates and decorative pieces. Surprise your loved ones with an EDC knife, a unique gift that combines practicality with an element of surprise and mystery.
By taking the extra step to incorporate a Bovine Sheath into your current gift, you have the opportunity to significantly amplify its uniqueness. This simple addition can transform your present into something that feels not just extraordinary, but also incredibly special and personal.
Choosing a Christmas gift can be overwhelming, but with the Arno Bernard EDC knife, you're not just giving a gift; you're giving a tool for adventure, a symbol of trust, and a piece of art that lasts a lifetime. Whether it's for an outdoor enthusiast, a craftsman, or someone who appreciates unique gifts, an EDC knife, especially an Arno Bernard Knife, is a gift that will be remembered and cherished for years to come.
A standout feature of the iMamba® is its rounded tab, conveniently located atop the blade, which allows for effortless one-handed opening. This design element not only enhances the knife's functionality but also adds a touch of elegance to its overall aesthetic. The rounded tab serves as a testament to the careful consideration and attention to detail that went into the creation of the iMamba®.
In the industry of folding knives, traditionally they open using a mechanism known as the slip joint. The slip joint mechanism relies on a tensioned backspring, which holds the blade in place when closed and allows it to pivot open when pressure is applied. This design has been used for centuries and is commonly found in traditional pocket knives. However, modern folding knives also incorporate various other opening mechanisms such as liner locks, frame locks, and assisted opening mechanisms to provide easier and quicker blade deployment. These advancements have increased the convenience and functionality of folding knives in various applications.
The Arno Bernard iMamba® has a special mechanism that sets it apart from other knives. Unlike most slip-joint knives that have constant tension, this knife has a "safety" halfway through its opening range. This safety reduces the tension on the blade, making it easier for you to move your fingers before the tension increases again. This mechanism helps the knife open and close smoothly.
The detent of Arno Bernard Knives has been enhanced, simplifying the process of deploying the blade. This can also be accomplished with a reverse finger flick. The most recent iMambas feature caged bearings, which greatly facilitate disassembly.

In stark contrast to the vast majority of folding knives, which are machine-produced, the iMamba® is a testament to hands-on craftsmanship. The three brothers behind the Arno Bernard brand have left their tangible mark on each knife, evidencing the level of personal care and attention invested in their creation.
Precision Engineering: The iMamba's metallic tolerances are astounding - less than 1/100th of a millimeter, which is a tenth of the thickness of a standard piece of paper. These knives are a testament to precision engineering and meticulous attention to detail.
Hand-polished Blades: Each iMamba® blade is hand-polished to a gleaming mirror finish, highlighting areas requiring further refinement. To complete the process, the blades are tumbled with ceramic media, resulting in a satin gloss finish. The result? A shiny, razor-sharp edge set against the satin gloss of the blade body.
The Finest Raw Materials: The iMamba's excellence begins with the selection of superior components. Its blade is crafted from RWL 34 stainless steel, renowned for its strength and durability.
The Arno Bernard iMamba® folding knife is a true masterpiece, combining the finest materials, superior craftsmanship, and a commitment to detail. This knife is not just a tool; it's a work of art, a testament to the passion and dedication of the Bernard brothers. It is clear that the iMamba® is more than deserving of its "Best Knife" classification.
Before diving into the maintenance aspect, let's first explore the components that make up your classic slip joint folding knife. This knife, manufactured by Arno Bernard Knives, is a modern version of the time-honored slip joint mechanism, reminiscent of your first pocket knife.
The Rinkhals model features an RWL34 stainless steel blade that's renowned for its versatility and sharpness. Its nail nick offers easy opening, while the thumb notch provides comfort during use. The mirror finish on the blade echoes the aesthetics of vintage knives like your old Buck®, Western®, or Case®.
The knife's lightweight design is the result of a Titanium frame, pocket clip, collar, and screws, resulting in a total weight of just 2.3 ounces. The hand-sewn leather slip protects the knife in your pocket, and the matching bead attached to the leather lanyard ensures easy access.
The slip joint mechanism of your folding knife is an innovative feature that sets it apart from other knives. Unlike most slip joint knives that have continuous tension throughout their entire range, this knife features a "safety" when it's about halfway open. This causes the blade to be under very little tension, making it easy to move your fingers out of the way before the tension builds again and assists in closing or opening the knife.
Unlike many slip joint mechanisms in folding knives that are pinned and can't be disassembled, our Rinkhals model offers you the freedom to break it down. All you need is a tungsten pin of the same size as the lanyard hole. This allows you to strip down the knife, clean it thoroughly, and put it back together with ease. If you're in need of such a tungsten pin and understand its usage, we suggest reaching out to your supplier for assistance. We're also working tirelessly to make this pin readily available for our clients who wish to maintain their knives in the best possible condition.
A classic slip joint folding knife like the Rinkhals from Arno Bernard Knives has several key components:
Regular cleaning is an essential aspect of maintaining your folding knife. Over time, dust, lint, and other debris can accumulate, especially in the area where the blade rests when closed. Here are the steps for cleaning your knife:
An essential part of knife maintenance is lubrication. Proper lubrication ensures smooth opening and closing and prevents rust. Apply a few drops of pivot lube to the pivot area of each blade and work them open and shut several times. Then, remove any excess lubricant with a cotton swab.
Keeping your knife sharp is crucial for optimal performance. Although the RWL34 stainless steel blade holds a sharp edge for a long time, regular sharpening will ensure it stays in top shape. Use a knife sharpening system like the Edge Pro Apex or Spyderco Sharpmaker for best results. Remember to always sharpen away from your body for safety.
Proper storage is crucial to prevent rust and damage. Always store your knife in a cool, dry place. If your knife comes with a sheath, avoid storing the knife in it for long periods as the sheath can trap moisture and cause rust.
The Titanium frame and handle inlay of your folding knife also require regular maintenance. Periodically, clean the Titanium parts to keep them looking new. For handle inlays made of wood or other porous materials, consider using a light coat of wax to prevent moisture and debris from seeping into any cracks.
If you are uncomfortable performing these maintenance tasks or if your knife needs major repairs, consider seeking help from professional knife care services. They will have the necessary tools and expertise to properly clean, lubricate, and sharpen your knife.
A classic slip joint folding knife like the Rinkhals from Arno Bernard Knives is a valuable tool that, with proper care and maintenance, can serve you well for many years. Regular cleaning, lubricating, sharpening, and proper storage are key to maintaining your knife's performance and longevity. Whether you're a seasoned knife enthusiast or new to the world of folding knives, these maintenance tips will ensure that your knife stays in top condition, ready for whatever tasks come its way.
Before delving into the debate between fixed-blade knives and folding knives, it's crucial to understand what a survival knife is. Despite the diverse array of knives available, a survival knife stands apart due to its versatile nature. It's a tool designed to perform a multitude of tasks, from self-defense in the wild to opening packages, carving wood, and even emergency rescue actions like cutting seat belts or breaking vehicle windows. Above all, a survival knife grants carriers the confidence to handle various situations life might throw at them, making it a vital part of your everyday carry (EDC) toolkit.
Fixed blade knives, as the name suggests, feature a blade that is permanently attached to the handle, forming a solid piece of metal structure. This design makes them remarkably strong and durable, making them the preferred choice for tasks that require robustness and resilience. Some of the standout features of fixed-blade knives include:
The lack of moving parts in a fixed-blade knife results in a solid, continuous blade that can withstand significant force and pressure. This resilience makes fixed-blade knives, such as those offered by Arno Bernard Knives, highly reliable for demanding tasks like splitting wood, hunting, or building a shelter.
Owing to their solid construction, fixed-blade knives are generally more resistant to wear and tear. The absence of folding mechanisms reduces the risk of mechanical failure, making them reliable companions for extended outdoor adventures.
Fixed-blade knives are often easier to maintain than their folding counterparts. Since there are no intricate mechanisms to take care of, cleaning and upkeep are fairly straightforward.
In contrast to fixed-blade knives, folding knives boast compactness and portability. The blade of a folding knife folds into the handle, making it a convenient EDC tool. While they may not be as durable as fixed-blade knives, folding knives offer several advantages:
Folding knives are compact and can be easily transported in your pocket. This makes them discreet and less intimidating, making them an attractive choice for urban environments.
Folding knives are highly favored for their versatility. Many folding knives, such as those from Arno Bernard Knives, feature robust locking mechanisms that securely hold the blade in place during use, enhancing their overall strength and stability.
Folding knives are accessible and ready to use immediately, making them highly valuable in emergencies. They are also safer to carry around due to their locking mechanisms, reducing the risk of accidental cuts.
Determining whether to choose a fixed blade or folding knife depends largely on your specific needs and circumstances. If you frequently engage in heavy-duty outdoor tasks, a fixed-blade knife like those produced by Arno Bernard Knives might suit you best. On the other hand, if you need a compact tool for everyday tasks, a folding knife might be the better choice.
Both fixed-blade and folding knives have their distinct advantages and are suited to different situations. Ultimately, the choice between a fixed-blade knife and a folding knife should align with your specific needs, preferences, and legal requirements. Arno Bernard Knives offers a wide range of both types, ensuring that you can find a knife that perfectly suits your needs. Whether you need a robust fixed-blade knife for demanding outdoor tasks or a compact folding knife for everyday use, Arno Bernard Knives has you covered.

This pursuit of knowledge enhances their appreciation for the artistry and craftsmanship of knives.
Knife collectors come in all shapes and sizes, each with their own unique motivations and preferences.
Knife collecting is not just an individual pursuit; it is a hobby that brings together like-minded individuals who share a passion for knives. This sense of community among knife collectors is another aspect of the psychology that drives their passion.

]]>Pocket knives have been around for centuries, dating back to ancient Rome. These knives were used for a variety of purposes, from cutting food to self-defense. Over time, the design of the pocket knife evolved, and different types of blades were added to make them more versatile. The first folding pocket knife was invented in the 17th century, and it was not until the 19th century that the modern pocket knife was developed.
The earliest pocket knives had non-locking blades, which were held in place by friction. These knives were simple and effective, and they were a common tool for farmers, hunters, and tradesmen. The non-locking blade design allowed for quick and easy access to the blade, making it a convenient tool for everyday use.
Non-locking pocket knives have several benefits over locking knives. First and foremost, they are simpler and more reliable. The lack of a locking mechanism means that fewer parts can fail or break, making the knife more dependable.
Non-locking knives are also lighter and more compact than their locking counterparts, making them easier to carry in your pocket. They are also easier to use with one hand, allowing for quick and easy access to the blade.
The Arno Bernard Rinkhals Collection Hunting knife is made from the finest materials. The blade is made from RWL34 stainless steel, making it strong and resistant to corrosion. The damasteel is used to create intricate and beautiful patterns on the blade, while the solid titanium provides strength and durability. Arno Bernard Knives' dedication to using only the highest quality materials is what sets us apart in the world of knife making, and our customers can rest assured that they are getting nothing but the best.
The Rinkhals folding knife has a unique slip-joint mechanism that ensures your safety while using it. When the blade is halfway open, it's designed to be under very little tension, allowing you to easily move your fingers out of the way before the tension builds again. This feature makes it easier for you to close or open the knife. Unlike most slip-joint knives that have continuous tension throughout their entire range, this knife ensures that your fingers are always safe.

A good hunting knife is a critical component of any successful hunting expedition. Whether you are hunting for game, field dressing, or skinning, a reliable hunting knife is a must-have tool. A good hunting knife should be versatile, sturdy, and durable enough to handle any task you throw at it. It should also be comfortable to hold and easy to use. A poorly made hunting knife can lead to frustration, accidents, and even injury, which is why it's essential to invest in a good quality hunting knife.
The blade is the most crucial part of any hunting knife. It's essential to choose a blade material that is durable, corrosion-resistant, and easy to sharpen. Some of the popular blade materials for hunting knives include stainless steel, carbon steel, and Damascus steel. Stainless steel blades are durable and resistant to rust and corrosion. Carbon steel blades are easy to sharpen and hold an edge well, but they are prone to rust and require regular maintenance. Damascus steel blades are known for their unique patterns and excellent edge retention, but they can be expensive.
Arno Bernard Knives are renowned for their exceptional balance between edge retention and performance, which is primarily attributed to the N690 Bohler Steel used in their manufacturing. This steel is highly refined, resulting in a blade that maintains its sharpness even with prolonged use. Experts in the blade-making industry agree that finer steel grains offer better edge retention.
The handle is another critical component of any hunting knife. The handle should be comfortable to hold and provide a secure grip, even when wet. Some popular handle materials for hunting knives include wood, bone, and synthetic materials like G-10 and Micarta. Wood handles provide a traditional look and feel, but they require regular maintenance to prevent cracking and warping. Bone handles are durable and provide an excellent grip. Each Arno Bernard Knife is a unique piece of art made from raw materials processed into the finished creation. We use exotic elements from the farthest regions of South Africa and have developed methods to turn natural materials into beautiful and functional knives.
Before purchasing a hunting knife, it's essential to test it to ensure that it's the right fit for you. Some ways to test a hunting knife include checking the balance, testing the edge retention, and examining the handle. A well-balanced hunting knife will feel comfortable in your hand and reduce hand fatigue. To test the edge retention, try cutting through different materials like rope or cardboard to see how well the blade holds its edge. Finally, examine the handle to ensure that it's comfortable to hold and provides a secure grip.
When choosing a hunting knife, there are several factors to consider. These include the type of hunting you will be doing, the size of the knife, and the blade shape. For example, if you are hunting big game, you will need a larger knife with a sturdy blade. The blade shape will also depend on the type of hunting you will be doing, with drop-point blades being popular for general hunting tasks.
Choosing a good hunting knife is a crucial step in any hunting expedition. A good hunting knife should be sturdy, durable, and comfortable to use. When choosing a hunting knife, consider the blade material, handle material, and size, among other factors. Finally, always test the hunting knife before buying to ensure that it's the right fit for you. With the right hunting knife, you can enjoy a successful hunting expedition for years to come.
Investing in a good hunting knife is an investment in your hunting career. A good hunting knife should be tough enough to use and nice enough to collect. Visit our website today to browse our wide selection of hunting knives that are built to last a lifetime.
Furthermore, cobalt, an unusual alloying element, is added to the steel to provide an extra edge. The inclusion of cobalt results in a rare uniformity, creating a fine and consistent edge that enhances the retention of the edge and the ease of sharpening. Considering the source, it is safe to say that the N690 steel's edge-holding ability surpasses that of most stainless steel formulations.
Choosing your EDC knife
When it comes to choosing the right type of EDC knife, there are a variety of options available in the market. Two of the most popular choices are Folding Knives and Fixed blade Knives. Arno Bernard is a leading brand that offers a wide range of knives that cater to different needs and preferences. How to use your Arno Bernard EDC knife safely
Using an EDC knife requires caution and care. One of the most important things to remember is to always use your knife away from your body. Additionally, you should always make sure that your knife is sharp. Dull knives are more dangerous than sharp knives because they require more force to cut through materials.
When using your knife, be sure to hold it firmly and use a slicing motion rather than a chopping motion. This will help prevent the knife from slipping and causing injury. Finally, always make sure to store your knife in a safe and secure location when not in use.

]]>The first step in choosing the best hunting knife is to understand the different types of hunting knives available. A fixed-blade knife is the most popular type of hunting knife. These knives typically have a longer blade and are best for tasks such as field dressing and skinning game. They are also the best choice for hunters who want a reliable and durable knife. Folding knives are also popular among hunters, as they are easier to carry and can fit in smaller spaces. These knives are also ideal for hunters who need a knife they can easily carry and access.
The next step in choosing the best hunting knife is to consider your specific needs. Consider the types of tasks you will be using the knife for and the environment in which you will be hunting. Different types of hunting knives are designed for different purposes. For example, a fixed-blade knife is best for field dressing and skinning game, while a folding knife is better for tasks such as cutting rope or slicing fruit.
Once you have determined the type of knife you need, it’s time to consider the materials used to make the knife. The best hunting knives are made of high-quality materials such as stainless steel or carbon steel. These materials are strong and will stand up to the elements. It’s also important to look for a knife that has a secure grip.
Arno Bernard’s knives are known to have the perfect balance between edge retention and performance – If you are searching for a knife that can offer edge retention, stain and corrosion resistance, hardness and added toughness – look no further! Often an Arno Bernard Knife will be passed on as an heirloom to the next generation and make the perfect gift for both hunter and collector.
The materials that are used in the Arno Bernard knife handles are what gives them their South African authenticity. All the materials are handled with tremendous care; some take years to dry before they can be utilized in producing the handles. With an Arno Bernard Knife, each handle is unique in colour and pattern, and with some knives, a colour-coordinated sheath is created, further amplifying the visual impact of their beauty.
This skillful family of knife makers uses mostly natural materials to produce their knife handles, including Giraffe Bone, Warthog Tusk, Kudu Bone and Mammoth Molar.
The best hunting knife can also be used for a variety of other tasks. From opening cans to cutting rope, a good hunting knife can be used for a variety of tasks. Here are a few of the most common unconventional uses for the best hunting knife:
The best hunting knife is only as good as its care and maintenance. These knives mean specialised skill and artistry, high quality material, and beautiful designs. It is a lengthy and involved process, and because of this, they tend to cost a bit more than an ordinary, mass produced hunting knife. Often an Arno Bernard Knife will be passed on as an heirloom to the next generation, and it is important, if you want to ensure you have a lifelong companion, to take proper care of your knife.
You need to clean your knife regularly, and every time after use, cleaning it with a non-abrasive soft cloth.

Arno Bernard makes a range of small knives and folding knives for hunting, but in reality, they are just as handy as everyday carry knives. A good small knife is really man's best friend, a cold piece of comfort that you can carry with you wherever you go.
]]>If they like camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, sailing, snorkeling or any outdoor sport for that matter, a knife is a great gift. Knives are really handy to have around and there are endless outdoor or in-the-field tasks where a knife will save the day.
If they like crafts, cooking, woodwork, building, collecting, or even eating, a knife is always handy to have around.
]]>You've probably heard that old adage that "to give a knife is bad luck?” If you do not heed this and gift a knife anyway, you’ll need to temper the gift with some money, otherwise the friendship will be severed.
This "wisdom" is based entirely on superstition, possibly dating back to the Vikings who were a little touchy about being given knives for free. A mixture of ego and Viking etiquette fueled this, and no Viking worth his berserker battle rage, would accept a knife as a gift. Especially if this gift was superior to his own and one that he couldn't afford or win in battle. So, in order to be able to give a fine knife without ending up being skewered by the gift, the knife was "sold" really cheaply, and everyone rejoiced, and no blood was spilled.
The problem with old sayings is that they hang around long after their useful application has passed into history. Have you met any Viking Berserkers lately and wanted to give them a knife? Today the only thing a knife may sever is the red bow that you are trying to tie on (note to the wise make sure that you get a sheath for the knife too).
If we are going to be wary of the action of the gift (yes, a knife can sever) then taking the same logic from the knife superstition makes other gifts unsuitable too…
Then we would not give cars as gifts because surely the person will drive us crazy.
Or don't give money because they won't spend any time with you.
Rings won't work either because they will rap you around their fingers.
How about computers, they won't be able to process how much they mean to you.
Giving a watch means that the person's time is running out!
Silly right? So, it is time to leave the knife gift = bad luck thinking in the past where it belongs.
For the right person, a knife is the greatest gift you could gift. Given to an older person, it is a real sign of respect. For a younger person, it is a symbol of being recognized as an equal among peers, and of responsibility and trust. Knives have always been gifted in recognition of leadership, both future potentials, and in recognition of achievements past. A knife presented to someone in a time of strife shows that they are cared for, and it conveys the hope of a future reunion, safeguarding their survival until it is safe once more.
If they like camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, sailing, snorkeling or any outdoor sport for that matter, a knife is a great gift. Knives are really handy to have around and there are endless outdoor or in-the-field tasks where a knife will save the day.
If they like crafts, cooking, woodwork, building, collecting, or even eating, a knife is always handy to have around.
However, if they have some Viking ancestry then you can possibly keep looking for another gift for Christmas or include a penny to be safe.

It is a fortunate few who were raised on the hunt, who have tested their mettle in live situations and gone on to make a living from their bushcraft. For the rest, who have come to the sport a little later in life, there is some catching up to do. As a hunting hobbyist (someone who works to hunt) will only get a few outings a year, it is a good idea to spend the non-hunting time (spare office hours) doing some research. Some practice hours (after hours & weekends) will also make sure that the next live outing is successful.
YouTube is full of survival and hunting experts, who will claim to show you the best way to build a shelter, sharpen a knife or field dress a trophy. There are gear guides, tips, and tricks, show and tell and all manner of claims to fame and courses to join or subscribe to.
But aside from spending time in the wild, how else do you sharpen your hunting skills?
The best way to learn is through experience, actually doing it yourself, and absorbing skills from staying close to experienced hunters that accompany you on a trip. Second-best is to go on a course for a few focused bushcraft lessons.

Why do people collect knives? A non-knife collector may be of the opinion that one knife is surely enough, why would anyone want or need more than that? Another would look at the fear and intimidation angle that pointing a knife at someone exacts. But we will forgive these opinions, as true hunting knife owners are in an entirely different class of their own.
Some Alpha males would point to the primal urge that is in every man to hunt and provide. This subconscious energy drives our modern actions and finds comfort in using simple tools and spending time in the outdoors. The Alpha male profile is always looking for an edge over his environment and a knife is a natural choice for being able to overcome and succeed at a multitude of tasks. The primitive behavior that ensured the survival of the tribe is mostly absent in today's polite society. However, in the open country or in a survival situation these primitive skills are awakened, and knife-related survival skills are essential and given the respect that is due.
A knife owner who has a large collection may seem a little overenthusiastic to an outsider. What is not evident is that a collection takes many years to grow. The earliest piece that was collected is cherished, and there is a story attached to this piece that has deeply impacted the collector, creating the appreciation and desire to begin a collection. It goes a little further than say a shoe collection, where a knife collection would rate in a similar category as an art collection, exotic artefacts, or even a fine vintage wine collection. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder and a selection of fine knives gives the collector as much satisfaction as a masterpiece would bring to an art collector.
There is a language that is spoken that is understood by a listener in that they understand the words, but the sentences are completely incomprehensible. Knife and gear language has its own vocabulary and is understood by a niche group of people that sets them apart from the crowd. Climbers will talk of crags, lead and second, belayers and pitch. When you need to rescue someone on a cliff this is the skill set you need. Hikers will use words like base weight, GPS, rock hop, scree, and slackpack. A gear-minded person will have extensive knowledge of the finer details of their chosen passion.
Knife owners will use words like edge retention, knife action, belly, bevel, drop point, spine, heft..., and metals and handle materials are important considerations. Knife qualities are instantly recognized, where workmanship and attention to detail are appreciated.
Ultimately a gear-minded person will gravitate towards using and owning the best equipment for their chosen sport or interest.

However, this simple-seeming statement can be misinterpreted as exceptionally understated.
How about a little expansion? It's a high-quality hunting knife with a blade made from Bohler N690, which is hardened steel with excellent edge holding capabilities. Bohler N690 is the favoured steel for cutting tools, rotary knives, butcher knives and surgical instruments. The steel is corrosion-resistant, and the high carbon stainless steel is heat treated and tempered using a liquid nitrogen process. This leads to a staggering hardness and ability to resist deforming when subjected to stress and applied force, resulting in a razor-sharp edge, with excellent edge retention characteristics.
The custom-made blade is hollow-ground and hand-polished to a finish that makes the blade one of the finest hunting knives on the planet. The blade is completed with a knife handle made from exotic materials. Being true to the South African heritage and drawing inspiration from Africa's magnificent wildlife, the materials for the handles are locally sourced. This allows the handles to be made from the finest materials on the planet, such as Mammoth molar, Giraffe bone, Kudu bone, African Blackwood and Warthog tusk.
Sheathed in high-quality leather, the knives are protected and kept at the ready, for use in the field, on a mountain, campsite, beach or wherever you plan to go.
TOUGH ENOUGH TO USE. NICE ENOUGH TO COLLECT.

Our grandparents & uncles were really the original generations of dedicated knife carriers. As this new generation wouldn't leave home without their phones, the generation of old, slipped their carry-on into a pocket every time before heading out. Which generation was more prepared for the outside world? Prepared to meet a challenge and enjoy the great outdoors?
You decide for yourself, who had a richer life, left a legacy of stories, and was considered a legend to a younger generation.
The best bread tin
Do you remember those old rectangular oil cans? The vintage ones that were made from tin, from Castrol, Texaco, Mobil, Penzoil...? There is a lady who still makes the best bread using bread tins made from oil cans by her grandfather. The only tool used was a single blade folding knife. The tin was cut with precision and the edges folded inwards to leave a smooth rim. With the slightly rounded corners, reinforced base and deep volume, the bread is perfect every time.
A weekend camping multi-tool
The 'multi-tool' in question was actually a small, fixed blade knife. Having forgotten all the important or essential camping tools at home because of a quick grab-and-go camping trip, the only remaining tool was a car knife. This was a knife that always lives in the car for an emergency but is mostly used for opening snack packets that resist the normal attempts of opening. During the weekend this knife was pressed into use to make a peg hammer, used to prepare, and turn meat on the fire, chop vegetables, as a handy bottle opener, as a culinary utensil, screwdriver, first aid bandage preparation (not a knife related injury), and finally to help pack the camp gear up on the last day.

There is a type of drama that is created whenever a knife is drawn. The audience, if you have one, turns their attention towards your knife, mildly interested and waiting to see what will happen next. Your chance, should you choose to take it, is at this moment. Will you choose to entertain your new knife admirers with a little knife trick, or a quick flare of showmanship? This is more of a non-circus type of showiness; some knife owners have a natural quirk or ease when drawing their knives that is understated yet impressive.
A folding knife lends itself to an easy win with your audience, a quick, practiced, one-handed thumb flick and the blade is drawn. For extra showmanship credit, the speed of the knife coming to hand and the blade being drawn makes for an impressive almost sleight of hand magic. After using the knife be sure to let your audience admire the knife's quality for a grand finale before the knife is stowed away.
Take a look at our Rinkhals folding knife for a knife takes you back to a simpler time when your first pocketknife opened and closed without any locking mechanism. The slip joint mechanism of this folding knife features an innovative "safety" when it is approximately halfway open which causes the blade to be under very little tension, so it is easy to move your fingers out of the way before tension builds again and assists you in closing (or opening) the knife. Most slip joint knives have continuous tension throughout their entire range, which in some cases causes the blade to close before you can get your fingers out of the way. Since this knife does not have a mechanism that locks it open, always cut with the blade going away from you to prevent injury.
Our iMamba folding knife has a rounded opening tab on the top of the blade that enables one-handed opening.
How about a quick draw trick with a fixed blade hunting knife?
The secret to a successful draw with a fixed-blade hunting knife is in the balance. Our knives are handcrafted and are known to have the perfect balance between edge retention and performance.
A little goes a long way so a knife flash is impressive, and the safest. Just capture the light on the blade of your knife and make sure that the knife's quick glint is visible to your audience. A little spin on the palm or flip is a more advanced knife skill, as are the finger twirls. Make sure that the trick and catch are very well practiced before trying them in public.
How about a reverse draw or a spin on the draw?
Just a controlled wrist twist can look impressive with a knife in hand.
For extra showman credit, you can finish with a reverse spin or flip to present the hilt of your knife to the audience so they can admire the blade and hilt.
Arno Bernard Knives are designed for tough jobs and to be used as an everyday carry knife. They are finely crafted, and we can understand why they become badges of honor, collector's items, and excellent for showing off. Remember, they want to be used, and you will always have a richer experience when you tackle any knife task with your favorite Arno Bernard Hunting Knife.

Remember that desert island game? As kids when we were sitting around a campfire, resting during a hike, or just hanging out with the gang, someone would begin the desert island game. In the one we played, you had to choose 3 things that you would want with you if you were to be stranded on a desert island. You were not limited to size, tools, anything from a well-stocked armoury or even animals and/or people. Obvious easy escape items, like boats and planes, were off-limits.

In the one we played, you had to choose 3 things that you would want with you if you were to be stranded on a desert island. You were not limited to size, tools, anything from a well-stocked armoury or even animals and/or people. Obvious easy escape items, like boats and planes, were off-limits.
This imagination game assumed that you would have instant access to these things if the situation arose and you were deposited alone on an island, like some sort of magical backpack that would follow you in times of peril.
Once the items were pulled out of the bag, you had to defend your choices, battling against a torrent of reasons why your selected items would ultimately leave you in dire peril, with your goose cooked and you ultimately kicking the bucket. So, the gauntlet was laid down and the battle began for the one who was acknowledged as having thought of the coolest items.
Angelina Jolie, or Pamela Anderson for the boys, Brad Pitt, or Tom Cruise for the girls, were unquestionably an outstanding use of one of your 3 items. The remaining items were generally inspired by the latest movie on the circuit. Then, RPGs, heavy machine guns, chainsaws, Chuck Norris’ and light-sabers, were liberally scattered around on the various imaginary desert islands. Oddly enough no one mentioned something simple like taking a hunting knife... Clearly, the survival skills of a kid are limited, whereas the imagination was boundless.
What can a hunting knife do to keep you alive if you needed to survive:
Looking back, if an Arno Bernard hunting knife was pulled from the magic survival backpack, it would have beaten Chuck Norris hands down as the coolest desert island survival item. In fact, a good hunting knife is really all you need if you have imagination and boundless mental resources. And unlike the desert island game, the final word on a hunting knife is that you would actually have it on you if something did happen.
Bring out the kid in DAD this Father’s Day, and gift him the ultimate survival tool, an Arno Bernard Knife.

As people we build our sense of worth by who we believe we are, our identity is forged by our accomplishments, past experiences, and future expectations. Over time we have developed a built-in appreciation for fine things that fit within our ‘natural or self-established’ identity. For example, car enthusiasts are drawn to classic cars, and can discuss at length, torque, engine capacity, top speed, famous drivers …. They may even drive fast themselves, however, not all of them are good drivers or own a car worthy of attention.

For example, car enthusiasts are drawn to classic cars, and can discuss at length, torque, engine capacity, top speed, famous drivers …. They may even drive fast themselves, however, not all of them are good drivers or own a car worthy of attention.
Likewise, hunting enthusiasts will have in-depth knowledge of animals, how to hunt and catch certain species, tracking skills, trapping, and living for extended periods in nature. But not all of them own any decent kit or are able to carve a Sunday roast.
Even for people who have not moved in an ‘enthusiasts inner-circle’ they can still recognise mastery and quality. When we notice the combination of quality and skill, it is only natural for us to experience an increase in attention as our focus is captured. A fast car parked is just another car parked in the parking lot, a fast car driven with skill as worthy of attention. In the same way an apprized knife is just another knife in a sheath, an apprized knife used with skill is awesome.
When we witness quality and skill at work, there is a ripple effect, where we are also inspired to achieve greatness. Like a master publicly working his craft, causes people to pause and witness the skills on display. And in that crowd inspiration will ignite and people will walk away resolving to master a skill of their own.
A task performed with practiced precision; the ease of mastery is evident in the actions. Great skill comes from practice, patience, and the right tools. When you own an Arno Bernard Hunting Knife, we recognise you as part of our Club, as an appreciator of quality, and knifes made with skills that have been handed down through generations. The mastery of the knife you choose will come naturally.
The Arno Bernard Knives are made on the outskirts of the town of Bethlehem, South Africa. The four Bernard brothers collectively have an amazing talent, and their skill is noteworthy in each knife they make. Though they work incredibly well together as a team, and all of them have some role in the actual hand finishing of the knives and sheaths, each brother has a more specific role to play in the crafting of these beautiful creations.
Arno Bernard Knives are made from premium materials at affordable prices. Our simple designs are both practical and aesthetical and therefore suitable for collecting or everyday use. An Arno Bernard Knife is an excellent companion, gift, and heirloom.
In times past, scars were seen as badges of honor, a vivid display of courage and daring. The dueling scars or Schmitte of the upper-class Austrians and Germans are an example of men wanting to be seen as brave, having honor in their society and being good husband material.
Not that we are suggesting that you accidentally-on-purpose injure yourself on your next outdoor adventure. But, it would be fair to wonder, in a room full of people, who would be given the most honor, an adventurer or a person sporting a Schmitte?
Both are skilled and accomplished in their craft, but the skills of an adventurer have by far the most practical value.
How do we recognize an adventurer in a crowd?
The trappings of civilisation have no hold on an adventurer, so you might look for tanned skin, an air of quiet self-assurance, a quality of competence, a steady and intent gaze, perhaps a scar or two, or an item on their person that sets them apart - the most obvious would be the everyday carry knife.
This badge of honor, your everyday carry knife, is generally self-awarded, with little fanfare. But, this does not mean that it carries less weight than a club or 'official' award, it is just that you have recognized in yourself that you are worthy of this honor. The ability to fillet a fish, field dress, prepare a meal, make camp or emergency strike a halyard or jib sheet, are all skills that are yours for keeps, ingrained in your character. Such great deeds and hard-won skills deserve the highest honor, so carry your Arno Bernard Knife with pride, because surely you have earned it.
Arno Bernard Knives are designed for tough jobs and to be used as an everyday carry knife. They are finely crafted, and we can understand why they become badges of honor, collector's items, but don't let them gather dust. They want to be used, and you will always have a richer experience when you tackle any knife task with your favorite Arno Bernard Hunting Knife.
Why would you be cutting yourself? If you have not ever tried to perform a task with a blunt knife, you are fortunate to have been spared many frustrating moments and saved on plasters.
I saw a kid that was given a knife by his dad, just a small folding knife, the best gift ever for a young lad, but before the kid was allowed to run off and look for something to cut or whittle, the dad sawed the knife on the curb of the pavement. The intention was to blunt the knife, so the knife was rendered 'less dangerous'. The kid was decimated by the violation of his new knife and was forced to put more effort into a knife task causing the knife to slip occasionally resulting in a few nasty gashes.

Just cutting some biltong, preparing meat, or even cutting a loaf of bread can become a dangerous activity with a blunt knife. Rummaging through the draws of a hunting lodge reveals a multitude of knives and after trying the entire 'range available', none were suitable for the task at hand, in fact, some were downright dangerous as the blade twisted or slipped under the cutting pressure.
The solution of course is to carry your own knife. You will never be disappointed when you are using a good knife. The blade slices as intended, going where you want it to go. There is a great amount of pleasure and satisfaction to be found in a task that is performed well with the right tools for the job.
Most knife accidents are not the result of the knife being "too sharp" they are a result of poor quality causing the knife to flex, break or slip. A sharp knife allows the user to apply less pressure in the cutting or slicing action.
The resulting cut with a sharp knife is smooth and precise, but with a blunt knife, the cut will look hacked and ragged.
Using less pressure means that you have more control over your knife, and you can stop the cut immediately when the knife has moved through the resistance, and not end up "following through" with all your effort as the knife exits the resistance.

It is far better to spend our time enjoying the fine things we have and not suffer from using cheap imitations just because we want to save the good stuff for a special occasion.
This was highlighted recently when chatting to a retired outdoorsman, retired from his work, not the outdoors. He showed me a fine Arno Bernard knife that had been locked in the safe because it was "too good for everyday use". The knife was handcrafted, engraved, and presented to him as a special gift. Now after many years of being stored for 'safekeeping', he finally took the knife out and began using it as his everyday carry knife.
Now, every opportunity he has, to draw the knife for use, even for pairing an apple, he receives a great sense of pleasure from using his Arno Bernard knife for its intended purpose. The knife is lovingly cleaned and returned to the sheath along with a smile for the memories of the people who gifted this fine item to his care.
This carpe diem wisdom is also reflected in this ancient adage - A man who chooses to buy a fine pair of boots will have dry feet for years to come, while a man who buys only cheap boots will have spent many times more on boots over the same period and will still have wet feet.
It is time to take out your fine crockery, pots, and pans. Use the good tablecloth, table silver, and cutlery at every excuse. Wear your good shoes, use your nice pen, pack your best hunting gear and strap on your finest Arno Bernard knife. Enjoy every moment of your life, you are not here to spend time as the guard of your own treasures, you are here to enjoy them to their fullest.
We never know what the next hunting/fishing/camping trip will bring. Perhaps it will be the best outing you have ever had, the one you remember fondly that becomes your most entertaining story to tell. Imagine how much better your experience will be if you had your favourite gear with you. So pack your best Arno Bernard hunting knife and head out in anticipation of the next great experience.

Let's now look at the wielder of the knife in either situation.
Imagine an encounter on a lonely beach with someone carrying a kitchen knife. What are your immediate thoughts? There is a good possibility you'll feel a bit nervous. Especially if the knife is a nice big carving knife. The same applies to an encounter with someone in the woods. We have seen enough horror movies to know what happens next. Even if the person is genuinely just using the knife for hunting, his credibility is severely diminished. We do not automatically trust that this person has any outdoor skills of note.
A person with a decent hunting knife, even drawn, does inspire quiet confidence. We would expect this person to be fully accomplished in bushcraft, fully able to thrive in the environment, build shelters and tell a decent hunting story.
Then there is the multi-functionality of a knife that is taken to the wild. It is expected to perform to a high degree of tolerance, able to accomplish many functions without losing its edge or breaking under the strain. Imagine the abuse a kitchen knife will suffer under the strain of field dressing, making camp, opening cans, popping a beer, preparing a meal... completely reasonable to expect a hunting knife to accomplish these and more.
Let's take the hunting knife into the kitchen. The hunting knife is more robust than you would expect to find in a kitchen but not altogether out of place. Able to accomplish all the tasks of a kitchen knife whilst giving the user an air of eccentric excellence. ]]>Making knives involves specialised skill and artistry, high-quality material and beautiful designs. It is a lengthy and involved process. The four Arno Bernard brothers make their knives on the outskirts of Bethlehem in South Africa. They are exceptionally skilled in producing artful knives, and their leather knife sheaths are just as noteworthy.
Often an Arno Bernard Knife will be passed on as an heirloom to the next generation, and if you want to ensure you have a lifelong companion, it is important to take proper care of your knife and sheath.
Leather is a traditional material used to make sheaths, and it's still one of the best types of sheath materials to use. If you're not a knife nerd, please note not to use a leather sheath for long-term storage. The leather absorbs moisture and traps it next to the blade.
We can list many good things about using leather to make our knife sheaths, but one of the main advantages is the aesthetics. Leather is a durable material that looks beautiful, feels nice in your hands, and smells so good!
To take care of your leather knife sheath, simply use any available leather dressing or oil. Apply a small amount to the sheath using a soft, clean cloth. This will lengthen the lifespan of your leather sheath. Allow for 30 minutes to soak into the leather before handling it again.

It saves a lot of time, and the parts are more precise. He also shows how he threads a needle and saddle stitches the knife sheath.

It is therefore mostly Franco that is involved in new product designs and Juan that heads up the handle division.
This skilful family of knife makers uses mostly natural materials to produce their knife handles, including Giraffe Bone, Warthog Tusk, Kudu Bone and Mammoth Molar.
The giraffe shin bone is among the strongest animal bones and is extremely dense. This not only makes for a durable knife handle material, but it is also beautiful. This handle material produces exquisite natural shades, and it is the different amounts of fat inside the bone that causes the variety of patterns.
The Warthog tusk ivory is an excellent material for knife handles and creates an extraordinary, polished handle that stands out from the crowd. The Warthog is a most unusual animal, and its large tusks are even more so. It is a robust hog with two sets of tusks: upper tusks emerging from the sides of the snout to form a semicircle and lower tusks at the base of the mouth to give it a sharp cutting edge.
The Kudu is one of the most magnificent antelope found on the African plain. Kudus have a narrow body with long legs and big heads. The bulls tend to be much larger than the cows with horns that can grow between 46 - 74 inches. Both the horn and the bone are used in handle material.
Fossils of mammoth teeth are strengthened through a process to create a unique luxury knife handle. Molar teeth are the large, flat teeth at the back of the mouth that are used primarily to grind food. These molars have three different layers creating patterns that can differ depending on the cutting direction. Their durability and exquisite beauty make them great for use in knife handles.

If you are acquiring a knife for hunting, consider what type of game you'll be preparing. Our knives are traditionally designed for cutting, and usually have double sharpened edge blades that are slightly curved on most models, ideal for skinning and cutting. We have a wide selection of Fin and Feather or Fin and Fur; our fixed-blade series ranges from just over 70mm to our Giant series with blades as large as 117 mm. We now also have folders that are an excellent addition to your hunting artillery or knife collection.
The sharpness of your knife is not something you can compromise on and is vital in your knife selection process. The quality of a knife lies in the type of steel, the type of grind, the heat treatment, the handle material and finally the finishing of the knife. Arno Bernard Knives are cut from Böhler N690 (fixed blades) and RWL34 (folder) high carbon stainless steel, followed by hand hollow ground and then hand polished. The blades are heat treated and tempered using a liquid nitrogen process. This leads to a staggering hardness and ability to resist deforming when subjected to stress and applied force, resulting in a razor-sharp edge, with excellent edge retention characteristics. No matter your game, an Arno Bernard knife tells your outdoor companions that you have incredible taste and carry only the best gear.
